[Video] Active Investing – A Contrarian Approach

On the 23rd of May 2018, AJ Bell Youinvest held an investor evening on the topic of ‘How fund managers pick stocks’ at St Pauls Conference Centre in London.

Ally McKinnon, manager of The Scottish, presented on the merits of active investing using a contrarian approach. In particular, what does contrarian investing mean and how does it work?

Ally discussed the implications of our current political and economic environment and focused on the art of ‘thinking differently’ when it comes to making investment decisions. He looked specifically at the influences of crowd behaviour and its impact on the equity markets, expanding on the idea of seeking a balance of risk and reward over the longer term.

He illustrated some of these ideas with company examples including; Tesco, Rentokil Initial and Treasury Wine Estates, showing how these fitted into the three investment categories used at The Scottish – Ugly Ducklings, Change is Afoot and More to Come.

His thought provoking and engaging presentation drew a highly successful and enjoyable evening to a close – you can watch the video of Ally’s presentation below.

Please remember that past performance may not be repeated and is not a guide for future performance. The value of shares and the income from them can go down as well as up as a result of market and currency fluctuations. You may not get back the amount you invest.
